Maya Arts and Craft

To explore how the Maya expressed their culture through the arts.

Slideshow to accompany lesson plan.

Rather than generating a specific lesson we have suggested a range of activities that could take place at any point in the topic. They could act as stand alone lessons or could be combined to create a carousel lesson displaying a range of Maya art.

Skills activities:

  • Identify features of various resources- looking for identifiable links to Maya culture e.g. students could spot the use of language or other artistic patterns
  • Show images of Maya art and include a text explanation on the reverse
  • Order sources into chronological order- Preclassic, Classic, Postclassic

Activity suggestions:

1) Canvas painting e.g. once students have identified their own nawales/nahuales or the symbols for their birthday (see religion lesson plan)

2) Design nawales (spirit animal companion)

3) Design a huipil

4) Write a song/poem

5) Build a temple e.g. design a net and build a cardboard temple or use sugar cubes to measure area

6) Conduct a Maya ceremony- use as an opportunity to study a Maya language or the symbolism of the nawales
